Ronnie DeVoe grew up in the Cathedral Projects in the South End of Boston, Massachusetts. He lived in the Cathedral Projects (often referred to as the South End projects) during his childhood, which is a few blocks away from where other members grew up.
He grew up in a, at times, difficult environment in the Boston housing projects before finding success with New Edition. Rehearsals sometimes took place at his grandmother's apartment in the Cathedral Projects before they moved to a local Boys & Girls Club because she was tired of them scuffing the floors.
